A decent night in the moth trap with an Early Grey (Xylocampa areola) – one of the first moths to emerge each year – and a Flame Shoulder (Ochropleura plecta) which has 2 generations – 1 in April and 1 in September.

Found this beauty while doing some pruning (rather, The Boy found it). Hard to ID but I suspect it’s a Yellow Underwing (Noctua pronuba). One of our most abundant larger moths, according to UK Moths.

The first version of the DIY moth trap didn’t really work, so I upgraded with a plastic dog collar from the vets to raise the height of the baffle to the top of the bulb. And it worked a treat with 6 moths, of 6 species!

Found this loose in the garden. Assume it’s over-wintered but I don’t know what it’s going to be so going to keep an eye on it on the off-chance that I catch it emerging.
